NTL provides police vehicle equipment test facility

11th Oct 2004

  • Three-year contract to run managed service for PITO
  • Vehicle EMC workshop and assessment facility
  • Guidelines and recommendations for all police vehicle installations

NTL's Public Safety group has won a prestigious contract to run a vehicle equipment and installation test facility for the Police Information Technology Organisation (PITO).

The PITO Automotive & Equipment Section (formerly known as the Home Office Vehicle Inspection Design Group, VIDG) draws up specifications and codes of practice for police vehicles, and the additional equipment fitted to them, from the perspective of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and Health & Safety.

NTL will provide a secure managed Vehicle EMC Workshop facility to test equipment against EMC specifications and assess vehicle installations.  It will also provide a First Line Support Team to liaise with and visit PITO-nominated users to offer guidance on vehicle installation issues.  On-site laboratory facilities will also enable PITO to undertake additional engineering tasks.

Richard Grant, strategy development manager in NTL's Public Safety group, said: "It's a real compliment to have been chosen to carry out this important work for the police service.  Our technology independence and long experience of vehicle installation work across all the emergency services has stood us in good stead in winning this tender."

PITO's Commercial Director, Mark Keene said:  "It is essential that all police vehicles meet the highest safety standards.  We are confident that PITO has selected the right organisation to manage this vital equipment test facility on behalf of the police service and look forward to continuing our work with NTL."
