London BT Movio DAB/DAB-IP Trial

As a result of Arqiva's experience of designing and deploying networks to deliver services to mobile devices (including the national DAB network for Digital 1 in the UK), we were chosen to investigate and design the enhancements required for the Digital 1 network that would be needed to successfully deliver mobile TV for BT Movio.

The original DAB network was optimised for the reception of digital audio, so the signal levels needed to deliver the requisite quality of service for live TV reception had to be enhanced in some areas. This was done by introducing new low power transmitters into the existing network on the same frequency, in such a way as to be seamless to users. This was not a simple task, as the potential impact on other broadcasters using DAB networks on adjacent frequencies had to be taken into account. This resulted in Arqiva gaining unrivalled knowledge of "adjacent channel receiver blocking" issues when designing the new types of network that will be needed for mobile TV services.

For BT Movio the trial led to the  launch of the  first broadcast mobile TV service in the UK on 1st October 2006 with retail partner Virgin Mobile.
