Arqiva announced today its involvement in the 21st World Scout Jamboree, 28 July to 8 August, which marked the Centenary of the adventure of Scouting. At the special event Arqiva provided global delivery of the opening ceremony from Hylands Park, Chelmsford, on behalf of the World Scout Bureau. It used an SNG truck to uplink the broadcast feed event from site, and from its teleport in Winchester signals were turned around to other satellites for delivery across the globe.
As part of the agreement with the UK Scout Association, Arqiva also provided uplink facilities from Brownsea Island using two ‘flyaway' dishes. This enabled TV broadcasters all over the world to transmit TV pictures from the location and for the Sunrise ceremony to be delivered globally. The dishes were used instead of an SNG truck at this site because transport to the Island is limited and this method had a lesser impact on the environment.
Whilst 40,000 Scouts attended adventures of a lifetime in the UK, 28 million Scouts worldwide renewed their promise on 1 August. Arqiva provided a two-way link-up between Hylands Park and Brownsea Island for this special Sunrise Ceremony, which saw two Scouts from every country at the Jamboree renew their Scout promise on Brownsea Island, the site of the first Scout Camp.
Andrew Thorp, Media Officer, The Scout Association, said, "World Scout Jamborees happen roughly every four years and have always been an important event within the Scouting community. We needed a company on board that we could fully rely on during both significant ceremonies and also to enable successful transmission of pictures for TV broadcasters throughout the whole event. The two-way link-up Arqiva provided during the sunrise ceremony was extremely successful and allowed the scouts in Hylands Park to connect with fellow scouts on Brownsea Island during a momentous celebration."
Matthew Ivey, head of Occasional Video sales at Arqiva, said, "We were delighted to be involved in such a high-profile, significant event. World Scouting Jamborees have been happening since the 1920s and providing the uplinking facilities was a real honour. Arqiva is well-known for its experience in the industry and its commitment to providing top-of-the range facilities and onsite service gives customers confidence in our ability to deliver at such important events."
The Scout Association is currently active in over 216 countries and territories. In the UK it provides fun and adventurous activities for 400,000 young people aged 6-25, promoting personal development and helping them achieve their full potential. Activities held every year include camps and projects, which strengthen links between The Scout Association in the UK and other members of the World Organisation. However, the 21st World Scout Jamboree succeeded in bringing the World Organisation to the UK, making it the highlight of the World Scouting calendar this year.
