Arqiva has been selected by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) as their preferred supplier of the distribution network and managed transmission service for digital terrestrial television in the UK. Arqiva is also selected to provide an extension to the BBC's existing DAB digital radio network.
It is envisaged that Arqiva will design, build and then operate the digital TV network for the two Public Service Broadcasting (PSB) multiplexes operated by the BBC on the Freeview platform, replacing the current low-power transmissions as part of the digital switchover project. The BBC and Arqiva are working towards finalising the contract as soon as possible.
Steve Holebrook, Arqiva's managing director for Terrestrial Media Solutions, said: "This is fantastic news for Arqiva. We expect to be building the BBC's two multiplexes out to all 1154 transmission sites, managing both the distribution network and the transmission service itself for a very long time. Having previously reached agreement with Digital 3 & 4, we are now the chosen provider for all three public-service multiplexes in the all-digital era."
