John was appointed Chief Operating Officer of Arqiva in September 2008, following the acquisition of National Grid Wireless and the start of integration into Arqiva. He is responsible for all operations and engineering services across sites and networks.
Previously he was managing director of National Grid Wireless from April 2007, having joined that organisation (formerly Crown Castle UK Ltd) in 1997 when it acquired the broadcast transmission assets previously owned by the BBC.
During his BBC career John held a number of senior management positions involving the provision of broadcast operations and engineering services in the UK and internationally for the BBC World Service. In addition, he played a leading role in the development, by the BBC, of international commercial activity based on its broadcast transmission engineering expertise.
Prior to becoming Managing Director at National Grid Wireless, John was Director of Network Operations & Engineering and in this role was heavily involved in the development of digital broadcasting. He has overseen the design and build of the new radio and television networks in the UK as well as being involved with the development and ongoing operation of Freeview.
John also serves on the board of Digital UK, the organisation charged with managing the switch to digital television in the United Kingdom.
