Charles Constable has 20 years of experience working in UK public-service broadcasting and was appointed to the role of Managing Director, Digital Platforms at Arqiva in April 2011. His responsibilities include the two Freeview multiplexes owned and operated by Arqiva, and maximising the growth opportunities presented by multi-platform TV delivery
From 2005 to 2010 Charles was Director of Strategy at Channel 5 where he was responsible for all aspects of corporate strategy development including the sale of the business in 2010 and the proposed merger with Channel 4 in 2009. He also led the development and implementation of linear and non-linear distribution strategy for the business across all platforms as well as a wide range of commercial and new business development initiatives. He has extensive experience of working with Government and Ofcom on a wide range of broadcasting issues.
Prior to joining Five, Charles spent five years at the BBC, initially running the office of the Director General, Greg Dyke. He then led the Corporation’s development of its proposals and vision for Charter Review, culminating in the publication of Building Public Value in 2004. Charles then ran one of the four pan-BBC reviews that emerged from Charter Review – the Content Supply Review – looking at establishing the right mix between internal and external provision of television, radio and online content. Charles also led the BBC’s distribution activities.
Charles previously worked at United News & Media plc (1995 to 2000) where he was Director of Strategy for United Broadcasting & Entertainment, the group’s television and consumer-facing new media division. This included directing the successful bid for Channel 5.
Prior to this he was responsible for strategic development and planning at MAI plc between 1991 and 1995. He joined MAI after having spent 8 years in management consulting, mainly with Bain & Company.
He is married with three children and lives in London.
