Satellite Systems Engineer

Purpose:

  • Undertake operational preventative and corrective maintenance of Arqiva broadcast media systems. Specifically, digital video compression platforms, media distribution systems, RF transmission systems and their supporting ancillary systems
  • The work undertaken ensures that service availability is maintained to the mandatory high level required whilst transmission systems continue to meet Arqiva technical specification and customer quality benchmarks

Key Objectives:

  • Undertake corrective maintenance including diagnosing faults, evaluating problems and taking appropriate corrective measures
  • Undertake preventative planned maintenance and scheduled tasks
  • Complete routine reports, quality requirements and documentation
  • Originate requisitions for spares and replacements
  • Carry out equipment and system modifications
  • Undertake or support installation, commissioning and handover of project work
  • Participate in a voluntary call-out scheme
  • Ensure all work carried out is in accordance with safe working practices and that current safety regulations and requirements are observed and adhered to at all times
  • Undertake training and keep across new technologies
  • Carry out any tasks commensurate with your post as directed by the Engineering Manager
  • Participate in a shift rosta that provides operational cover 24hr 7 days a week, weekends and nights

Technical knowledge, Experience & Qualifications:

  • BTEC national level qualification in Electronic/Electrical Engineering or an ability to demonstrate knowledge to an equivalent level
  • Previous experience in the maintenance and/or testing of electronic equipment, preferably in the broadcasting or studio environment desirable
  • Must have good knowledge of both analogue and digital video and audio.  Must be familiar with analogue PAL-I composite video format and digital component video formats (SDI and HD-SDI)
  • Must be familiar with broadcast system standards and their associated measurements on measurement equipment and analysers. e.g. SDI, ASI, AES/EBU, MPEG TS, DVB Standards, PAL System I (525,625 line)
  • Have an appreciation of SDH, PDH, ATM telecommunication transmission systems and optical telecommunication systems
  • Must have knowledge of networking fundamentals and communication protocols. TCP/IP, UDP, Ethernet, Routing and Switching, EIA-232. EIA-485
  • Operational experience with power systems, including control, and bypass switching of a UPS
  • Must be eligible to live and work in the UK
  • Must have full clean UK driving licence

Personal Qualities:

  • Prepared to work irregular working hours as dictated by the needs of the business
  • Travel within the UK is a core part of the role - the applicant must be willing to travel, and may be required to do so at short notice
