Management Profile: Peter Harbison

Chief Operating Officer

Peter Harbison was appointed COO of Arqiva in March 2006.  In late 2004, he had been part of the bid team that resulted in the consortium led by Macquarie Communications Infrastructure Group (MCG) acquiring NTL Broadcast, now Arqiva.

Peter's path to Arqiva has been a circuitous one.  Having worked for 10 years in chartered accounting firms and investment banks (including Macquarie Bank), Peter joined what was then NTL Australia in 1999, shortly after NTL had acquired the privatised assets from the Australian government.

During the three years of NTL ownership, Peter worked closely with Tom Bennie (now Arqiva's CEO) as the business went through its transformation from the government owned National Transmission Network to a stand-alone commercialised company.  The primary focus during that period was securing digital transmission contracts with the government-owned broadcasters, ABC and SBS.  Peter co-ordinated the bid-team that was successful in securing national contracts with the ABC worth in excess of A$1 billion.

With the acquisition of NTL Australia (renamed Broadcast Australia) by Macquarie Bank in April 2002, Peter rejoined Macquarie but was seconded full-time back into the business as its CFO.  Peter played a pivotal role in the establishment and listing on the Australian Stock Exchange in August 2002 of MCG, with Broadcast Australia as its seed asset, and the management of that business for the following three years.

Arriving back in the UK in January 2005, Peter accepted the role of Arqiva's CFO and re-established his working relationship with many of the Arqiva senior management team he had worked with in Australia.
